Wadena County Farm Family of the Year 2022

The Farm Family of the Year program is sponsored by the University of Minnesota and honors families across Minnesota who are actively engaged in farming or an agricultural production. In addition, the farm family must have made significant short-term progress or has shown innovation over time and be involved in their community. The Wadena County Extension Committee honors a farm family each year in this university program.

This year’s Wadena County Farm Family of the Year fits all of the criteria mentioned. It is my pleasure to announce the 2022 Wadena County Farm Family of the Year honor – Randy and Jodi Becker.

A little bit about the Beckers. Randy and Jodi were both raised on farms – Randy near St. Michael in Wright County and Jodi near Blue Grass. Randy and Jodi were married in 2005 and farmed in both Wright County and Wadena County until October of 2011 when they purchased their farm from Jerry and Debbie Fischer, which was in the Fischer family for 98 years.

There were a lot of changes in 2011, at which time Becker Transport was established. They haul agricultural commodities and have diversified and have grown from one truck to seven. Recently the Beckers have grown even more with adding Landscaping products, including Mulch, Decorative Rock, Black Dirt, and continue to offer Class 5 Gravel, crushed concrete and crushed asphalt too, thus forming Becker Transport & Aggregate.

The Becker’s current farm operation consists of corn, soybeans, and hay rotation along with raising a few steers.

Randy and Jodi give a lot of credit to family members, past employers and friends who have taught them so much. Randy’s past employer, Hassan Sand & Gravel in Rogers, MN, was a huge influence on his future. The Becker’s current operation mirrors that of Hassan Sand and Gravel, in which they crop farmed, milked cows and had a trucking company. They taught the Beckers how to work hard, play hard and treated all of their employees as extended family. The family’s motto is “Nobody works for us, they work with us.” And over the years, talking and just listening to the families who have farmed here their whole life, have taught the Beckers a lot about the do’s and don’t of crop farming in this area.

Randy and Jodi have two children, Lauren and Luke. Both kids help on the farm with baling hay, feeding cows and horses, keeping up with the daily chores and washing trucks. Lauren is in 4-H and the Becker’s have sponsored the 4-H Pride Auction, as well as the 4-H Horse Project.

In addition to being honored here at the Wadena County fair, the Becker family will be honored and officially recognized in a ceremony at the annual Farmfest event held near Redwood Falls, Minnesota, in August.

Please help me honor Randy and Jodi Becker as this year’s Farm Family of the Year for Wadena County.
